My dance association is called the British Association of Teachers of Dancing, B.A.T.D. for short, of which I am an Associate. They have been in existence since 1892. The Association may have started a little before then but the first record is from November 1892.
The BATD are represented on the British Dance Council, The Central Council of Physical Recreation, The Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing and the Stage Dance Council International. The British Association is represented in the United Kingdom, Malta, Canada, America, Australia, South Africa, Spain, France, Italy, Holland, Germany, Belarus, Latvia, Korea and many other countries.
British Association of Teachers of Dancing - B.A.T.D.
In 1892 the British Association Of Teachers of Dancing was founded and became the
first Dancing Association to encourage the professionals of the day to organise themselves
into a society to improve and develop the art of dancing, in many forms.
Children or Adults are entered for examinations in the subjects taught in their class. I inform parents when I feel the child is ready to be entered into the exam. I will be preparing them to achieve the highest possible mark available. In Grade work, the order of Marks is, from highest to lowest; Honours, Highly Commended, Commended, Pass Plus, Pass, and Fail. In Medals it starts with Highly Commended and goes down to Fail.
In addition to examinations I will be preparing the children for Show work. My shows will be of a variety nature so will involve some singing and acting. I will be going through the scales with children in class but will expect them to practise any songs they are given, at home. Likewise with their dancing, I’d hope they will be able to practise steps or dances at home.
Examinations and Show work is quite time consuming so it may not be possible to put on a big Show plus exams all in one year. My first aim is to work towards the exams which I am hoping will be around Easter. I will keep you informed, If the children are ready, just before Christmas I will take them into a local retirement home to perform a short Christmas show. It may be only half and hour long but it is a very worthwhile exercise for the children and the residents love it!
